A BEGINNER'S GUIDE:
ELECTRIC (Electric guitar, lead, pick,
amp) This style is for playing modern rock music and it’s
associated styles It is best played using a pick although some players do use their fingers only. There are many techniques
to learn such as sliding up strings with the left hand fingers, string bending, hammering fingers on and off, playing percussive
‘damped’ sounds etc. The instrument is best played in a band with other musicians. You will learn to read TAB
- a system which shows you where to put your left hand fingers on the guitar, but you will need to learn to read rhythms from
the proper music line. Grades can be taken using the ‘Rockschool’ syllabus.
ACOUSTIC : FOLK/BLUES/TRADITIONAL (Steel/nylon-string guitar, pick)
In
this style you will learn to strum chords with right hand fingers or thumb or a plectrum (pick). You will also learn
fingerstyle; playing chords using finger patterns sometimes called broken chords or arpeggios. You will learn to play
melodies, folk or classical or rocky/bluesy/jazzy with a pick. This is a great style to accompany singing, either yourself
or another person or even another instrument such as guitar, harmonica, flute or fiddle. You will learn to read TAB - a system
which shows you where to put your left hand fingers on the guitar, but you will need to learn to read rhythms from the proper
music line. Grades can be taken (Registry of Guitar Tutors)
ACOUSTIC : ROCK/POP (Steel-strung
acoustic guitar, capo, pick) Strumming chords,
fingerstyle and/or picking. Mainly accompanying vocals but also instrumental pieces. You will learn to read TAB - a system
which shows you where to put your left hand fingers on the guitar, but you will need to learn to read rhythms from the proper
music line. (No grades available in this style)
CLASSICAL (Nylon-string guitar, footstool - from music shops, recommended for this style in order
to raise the left knee on which the guitar is balanced) Learn
to read proper music and play the guitar with left and right hand fingers. You play a melody line, bass notes and chord notes
all at once and the tunes are mainly classical or folk melodies (in the first 6 months you will learn just the melody line
however). The classical guitarist plays mainly alone but can play with other guitarists or instruments such as flute or recorder
in duos and trios etc. It is a softly-spoken but beautiful style. Grades can be taken with Registry of Guitar Tutors
or Associated Board
OTHER STYLES Jazz
or World music can be studied too, although students should already have some facility with the instrument for this
OVERALL You will learn to pick notes and strum chords using fingers
or pick, play pieces, read music or TAB and rhythms, improvise, play by ear, play by heart and compose items yourself.
TIP: Listen to as much music as possible – on-line, radio, CD’s etc., go to gigs/concerts,
join groups/play with others and set time every day to practice, practice, practice. Do a little every day and it will soon
pay off!
